Ultra-short pulsed laser technology

Ultrashort laser pulses with pulse durations ranging from several femtoseconds (1fs = 10-15s) to few picoseconds (1ps = 10-12s) offer completely new procedures for processing which are not possible with conventional tools. In the field of medicine new therapeutic options open up for example through highly-precise, low damage cuts in the eye. An essential characteristic of these laser pulses are extremely high peak intensities which can be reached at very low pulse energies due to the strong temporal compression. This enables a highly-precise material removal as well as the processing of temperature-sensitive materials without thermal damage of the surrounding material. With this technology completely new applications in different areas are possible.

The cooperation cluster has the goal to establish the technology of ultra-short pulsed lasers as a tool in industrial production especially for small and medium-sized enterprises. For that purpose, application areas for the ultra-short pulse laser technology shall be evaluated und transferred into realizable processes. The focus will be on the use of new components for beam forming, beam guidance und beam characterization as well as on the use of innovative sensor technology.
